Overcurrent Protection
SPRECON-E-P DS6
The main function of the SPRECON-E-P DS..6 series is overcurrent protection. The devices designed with the standardised hardware modules operate with the same firmware and offer the same scope of protection functions. The devices convince with a technically mature and commercially optimised modular design. Due to a maximum of flexibility and scalability, intelligent and compact solutions with clear economic advantages can be realised.
Areas of Application
The implemented protection functions allow selective protection of single-end and double-end fed lines (underground and overhead lines), transformers and motors, concerning all neutral-point connections. The devices are especially qualified for the following application areas due to their multi-faceted functions:
- One-box solutions for utilities (MV)
- Bay computers with back-up protection (HV)
- Industrial switchgear
Operating
In order to meet the requirements of efficient system management, all operations can be accomplished with the detachable HMI control panel. Hence, protection configurations can be locally carried out beside usage of the operating program SPRECON-E COMM-3.
All relevant information about processes and devices is shown on the full-graphical display of the control panel. Additionally, free configurable LEDs are available for signalling.
Separated navigation keys allow clear user guidance through the various pages and submenus. Furthermore, they facilitate simple configuration of extensive protection and control functions.
SPRECON-E-P D..4-Series
The SPRECON-E-P D..4 devices provide many measuring variants and therefore optimal adaption to plant requirements. Featuring a compact design and different possible recks, the devices can be easily installed, especially when older devices such as RN1 from Sprecher Energie have to be replaced. The cost-effectiveness of the D4 devices particularly becomes apparent when they are used in simple outgoing feeders as well as for backup protection.
The protection functions also contain event and disturbance data for evaluation. The D4 devices are operated via an integrated keyboard und a two-line LCD.
Despite a small control panel, comprehensive settings as well as measured-value and short report indications can be easily accomplished. Measured values are displayed in rotation. External stay-set indicators are no longer required.
Great importance has been attached to complete integration of all voltage supplies regarding the dual-powered devices. This allows autonomous protection, which integrates both tripping voltage for the breaker and optocoupler voltage supply for the inputs.
The capacitor-stored tripping energy is sufficient for most tripping coils. Therefore, old systems can be modernised by installation of D4 devices.
Despite given integration possilibites, power input from the transformers stays low, which allows implementation of cost-effective transformers.
SPRECON-E-P D..6-1-Series
With SPRECON-E-P D..6-1, Sprecher Automation introduces the follow-ups of the SPRECON-E-P D..2 devices. The series features a considerably larger set of functions. The devices are convincing in their highly developed and economically optimised modular design. The thin detachable HMI control panel allows easy mounting (i.e. to cublicle doors). The full-graphical LCD features clear indication of measured values and comfortable handling as well as analysis.
High space saving is achieved by compact arrangement of the device modules – especially concerning the 24 HP (horizontal pitch) case. The protection devices feature all functions which are relevant to outgoing feeders. The overcurrent protection devices additionally feature complete motor protection. Furthermore, overcurrent protection has been completed by "neutral earthing transforming".
Beside approved protection algorithms, measuring algorithms and protection functions, other important extensions have been accomplished:
- New protection functions such as voltage / frequency protection, treatment of intermittent earth faults, Q-U < protection, residual current correction etc.
- Higher accuracy
- More zones for signalling as well as tripping
- Selectable measuring algorithms
- Comprehensive testing and commissioning aids
- Selectable minimum relay durability for meeting external requirements
- Combinatorial logics for virtual binary inputs (no programming skills required)
- Logic operations for output relay applications
- Circuit breaker control and switchgear check backs as options
The large display area of the control panel offers user-friendly operation, which is similar to the PC software SPRECON-E COMM-3.
SPRECON-E-P DS..6-0
With SPRECON-E-P DS..6-0 Sprecher Automation offers a compact line of overcurrent protection devices. The product line also features a detachable control panel. The compact SPRECON-E-P DS..6-0 protection devices are equipped with standardised hardware modules and use the same firmware of the approved SPRECON-E-P series. The standard basic functionalities can be extended by packages which include additional protection functions. The implemented protection functions allow selective protection as well as main or backup protection of single-end and double-end-fed lines (underground and overhead lines). The devices also feature motor protection. Beside protection and collection of measured values, the compact protection devices also control circuit breakers.
Furthermore, the SPRECON-E-P DS..6-0 devices also support functions such as system decoupling or voltage and frequency protection.
Some extra protection functions such as Q-V< (reactive power undervoltage protection) and active power direction dependent FLS (frequency load shedding) are implemented in the firmware as autonomous protection functions.
- Package 1: Automatic reclosing (AR), teleprotection (TP), intermittent earth fault
- Package 2: Fault locator (FL), Q-V< protection, voltage/frequency protection, FLS
- Package 3 = package 1 + package 2
- Package 4 = package 1 + package 2 + synchro-check
Due to the comprehensive range of implemented protection functions the SPRECON-E-P DS..6-0 devices are applicable for most different protection tasks of the energy sector as well as industries. Because of their specific design, the compact protection devices can be easily installed into various bays – as spacesaving as it gets. Because of the comprehensive extra functions, the devices are especially qualified for solutions in the following application areas:
- Industrial switchgear
- Protection devices for utilities (MV)
- Protection devices for utilities (HV) as backup
- Municipal utilities
All functions can be configured separately. By separating protection configuration from control configuration, all different kinds of requirements of different applications can be met.
The protection-specific functions are separately activated or deactivated depending on the respective application. Irrelevant functions are hidden and inactive, which allows simple and structured configuration of the devices.

Hence, protection configurations can be locally carried out beside usage of the operating program “COMM-3“. All relevant information about processes and devices is shown on the full-graphical display of the control panel. Additionally, configurable LEDs are available for signalling. Separated navigation keys allow clear user guidance through the various pages and submenus. Furthermore, they facilitate simple configuration of extensive protection functions.
The SPRECON-E-P DS..6-2-Series consists of one-box solutions for protection and control, which allow protection of primary equipment by simultaneously accomplishing control and monitoring functions in electric power systems. The overcurrent protection acts as the main protection function.
The multifunctional SPRECON-E-P DS..6-2 devices can be used for various protection and control applications due to the wide range of implemented functions. They feature a clear separation of control and protection functions which allows either combined or separated operations of control and protection functions:
- Separated data models
- Separated control and protection firmware
- Separated control and protection configuration
- Separated passwords
- No testing of protection function at feeder nor primary circuit disconnection required on updating control parameters or firmware
Due to the wide range of implemented protection and control functions, the SPRECON-E-P DS..6-2 devices can be used for various protection and control applications. They can be therefore applied to all switchbay types, independent of customer-specific requirements.
Configuration
All functions can be configured separately. By separating protection configuration from control configuration, all different kinds of requirements of different applications can be met.
The protection-specific functions are separately configured or deactivated depending on the respective application. Irrelevant functions are hidden and inactive which allows simple and structured configuration of the devices. All configured bays are type-oriented stored in a database. They can be therefore copied and re-used as well as easily re-adapted, which facilitates configuration of large-scale systems.
